Why you don’t need coaching or counseling - but could benefit from it

Did you know that even psychologists see counselors? It is actually a requirement, not just to understand what it is like to be a client but to stay aware of our own patterns, biases, and blind spots. Because, let’s be honest, we all have them.

I have personally worked with both counselors and coaches over the years. Sometimes I need a little push. Sometimes I just need a space to think out loud and shift my perspective. Even in my workouts, I have relied on an app with guided runs to keep me moving. I know how to run. I know how to warm up. But when the app started glitching, I stopped running. Because even though I had the knowledge, I still needed that external nudge. Someone (or something) to remind me not to burn out in the first 10 minutes. (Thank God the app is back… and so am I!)

counseling

It is the same with counseling and coaching. Some of my clients come weekly or biweekly, treating it like a mental spa or gym class. Just saying things out loud helps them process. Others feel stuck, whether in career decisions, life choices, or major transitions, and need guidance to sort through their thoughts and gain clarity.

Counseling and coaching - what they mean and how they differ

  • Counseling focuses on emotions, mental health, and deeper self-awareness. If you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck in old patterns, or struggling with past experiences that affect your present, counseling provides a space to explore those feelings and work through them.

  • Coaching is more future-focused. It is about setting goals, making decisions, and taking action. If you are facing career or life choices and need structured thinking support, coaching helps you move forward with clarity and confidence.

I do both. Sometimes a session leans more toward coaching, sometimes it is more like counseling, depending on what you need in that moment.

Support has always been there - It just looks different now

Why do we need this kind of support? In the past, people lived in big families, following a shared way of life shaped by culture, religion, and community. There was structure, guidance, and a sense of belonging. Today, many of us live far from our families, sometimes by choice. Even if we are part of a culture or religion, we may not follow it in the same way our parents or grandparents did. And in a world that is changing faster than ever, that can leave us feeling unanchored.

That is where counseling or coaching comes in. Sometimes, a counselor or coach is like a priest or a friend, offering a non-judgmental space to listen and helping you see your options. Other times, they are like a grandparent who patiently listens and offers a fresh perspective. Or even a journal, the place where your thoughts become clearer just by putting them into words.

counseling

You may not need counseling or coaching. But having that space can make life a little easier.

Curious but unsure? Let's chat!

If you are unsure whether coaching or counseling is for you, I am available for a quick discovery call. No commitment, just a chance to get to know each other and see if we are a good match for this work. Think of it as a membership to a mental gym. Depending on the issue at hand, I offer different packages ranging from 5 to 10 sessions. These are renewable if you want to keep on exercising your mind or simply enjoy a mental spa for relaxation and reflection.

Have you ever talked to a counselor, worked with a coach, or asked for support from a psychologist? What was your experience? What are your favorite ways, apps, and memberships to support your mental and physical health? Drop it in the comments, I’d love to learn more!
